The "cool orb thingy" is a unique corrucyst found in the collapsing archival vein in the Embassy. It has a receptor-lock[1] and its surface bears a pigmentation sigil that reads "ON THE USE OF BRIGHT WEAPONRY"[2].
It is one of two items BSTRD requests before allowing the party into the "pain shelf" room, the other being the scary black box.
