The Obesk are a species that is native to their namesake, Obeski, a moon tidally locked to a gas giant.[1] During their search for life in other worlds, they were drawn to Earth through The Call. After arriving on Earth, they built The Embassy that was quickly discovered by humans.[2] The Obesk took seven years to establish contact with humans due to focusing all efforts on translation.[3]

After the events of the Collapse, the Obesk withdrew from Earth and limited contact with humanity.[4]

Appearance

During their larval lives, they closely resemble humans, which the Obesk fondly refer to as their "bright cousins."[5] Obesk sport horn-like growths on their heads called receptors which act as their primary nonverbal communication[6] and method of interacting with corrucystic technology.[7] Larval Obesk are also known to have additional armor on their skin.[8]

It is not known what Obesk look like after they ascend to be a Qou, but it is assumed they look similar to their signatures they use for the Obesk Collective. Additionally, a Qou Obesk can have multiple different appearances if they have multiple corru bodies constructed.[9]

Culture

Velzie

This section refers to the Obesk deity. For the thoughtform, see Velzie.

Velzie or the eye of Velzie is a deity that, depending on the Obesk, is either adored or despised by. It is modeled after a feature of the gas giant that Obeski is tidally locked to, which appears as a giant eye in the sky that glows in regular intervals. Moth has commented that the Obesk use it to measure time.[10] Velzie seems to be depicted as a trickster or playful god, as many Obesk colloquialisms revolve around the entertainment and amusement of them.

Caste

Obesk society is divided into several different caste classes that is indicated by the receptors that they are born with. It is not known if there is a hierarchy or if jobs are forced upon castes. Obesk have a first and last name, with their caste as their middle name.

Qou - Obesk that have left their larval bodies behind to inhabit mindcores and construct bodies made of corru.[11] They are typically referred to as once-caste, and replace their previous caste with 'qou'. They bear the receptors of their previous caste.

Jut - Short, devil horn-like receptors. They are typically engineers, which have the ability to manipulate corru through symbiotic "teaching."[12]

Kiv - Long, segmented receptors. They usually act as guards or security.

Tir - Branched receptors that are usually large and may resemble hands. They have the unique ability to produce acid, which aids them in digging and hunting.[13]

Vel - Spiraling, ram horn-like receptors. While it is not yet known what jobs they typically do, it has been noted they have troublesome personalities[14] and enjoy playing pranks.[15]

Life Cycle

It is currently unknown how Obesk reproduce, although they do have typical family structures (parents[16], siblings[17], etc). Moth has commented that the Obesk have an extremely low population.[18]

The period of life until death is called their larval life. Obesk can undergo ascension in which they leave their larval bodies to die in order to become a Qou. The death of a Qou (via mindcore destruction) is known as Final Death. Qou bodies do not require rest or organic food, but many Qou have rejuvenation chambers to offer the comfort of sleep and simulacrum to simulate drink and food.

At some point, the Qou can go through a process called renewal. This process can happen multiple times; Dullzkovik is noted to have been through four renewals.[19]
