The "cool orb thingy" is a unique corrucyst found in the collapsing archival vein in the Embassy. It has a receptor-lock[1] and its surface bears a pigmentation sigil that reads "ON THE USE OF BRIGHT WEAPONRY"[2].
It is one of two items BSTRD requests before allowing the party into the "pain shelf" room, the other being the 'scary black box'. It is found in the left room of the archival vein, and can be taken after defeating the enemies within. Though inaccessible to the party, it is likely how the BSTRD golem learned to operate its gun, suggesting receptor-locked items only restrict access for obesk.
